The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global, non-profit organisation with voluntary members working to transform the palm oil industry to make it sustainable. The Environment Specialist (Indonesia) will support the operations of managing environmental compliances of the P&C requirements specifically within the Indonesia region. This includes working with the Environment Specialist under supervision of the Head of Integrity (Assurance Division) to become the point of contact for RSPO Indonesian members to demonstrate compliance on the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) i.e., liability disclosure, Land Use Change analysis (LUCA) and compensation plan. He/She Is also expected to liaise and coordinate with external service providers and the RSPO Compensation Panel to ensure that all reviews / evaluations with regards to LUCA and Compensation Plan are carried out effectively and in a timely manner. This will include coordinating the review of the documents submitted, arranging meetings with the RSPO members; reporting on discussions and meetings with the Environment Specialist of Assurance Division; and monitoring progress of each compensation plan and remedial actions taken.

This position will work closely with the Environment Specialist of Integrity Unit and IT staff and/or Salesforce Specialist in improving the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) database module in Salesforce, and maintain up-to-date data. This position also assists in other areas of RSPO’s environmental management subjects such as GHG, Peat, HCS, and Drainability Assessment in a more operational mode within the Indonesian region. This includes leveraging systems-based technological enhancement and integrating solutions for compliance.

The location of this role is Jakarta, Indonesia.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but will not be limited to the following:

  • To be the focal point to coordinate activities and initiatives related to biodiversity and other environmental matters globally but mainly focus in Indonesia Region, specifically the implementation of RSPO standards and set of requirements by the the member, in collaboration with other subject matter experts internally.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders related to biodiversity and other environmental matters within the palm oil industry in Indonesia and represent RSPO for biodiversity-related events in and outside Indonesia as requested.
  • Provide expert advice on environmental matters to external and internal stakeholders, including on emerging environment-related issues, events and research relevant to the oil palm sector in Indonesia, in collaboration with other subject matter experts internally.
  • To work in consultation with other relevant Units and/or Departments within the RSPO Secretariat, whilst facilitating coordination as and when required.

Functional Tasks:

A. Coordinate the external review processes for RaCP in particular submission from Indonesian members

  1. Review submission of technical documents for information completeness
  2. Assist in quality assurance checks on reports
  3. Schedule document reviews by external parties e.g., LUCA reviewers, Compensation Panel, Compensation Plan evaluators
  4. Monitor and track reviews to ensure that reviews are delivered on time
  5. Process review payments collections and disbursements (e.g., letters of undertakings, invoices and related documentation for payments)
  6. Maintain relationships with RSPO growers, reviewers and Compensation Panel
  7. Support the Environment Specialist to maintain technical documentation for RaCP administration.

B. RaCP Salesforce data management in Salesforce

  1. Work with the Environment Specialist and IT staff and/or Salesforce specialists in improving the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) database module in Salesforce.
  2. Compile data from non-Salesforce registers (e.g. Google Sheets, emails, Excel sheets), verify data accuracy and upload into the Salesforce database
  3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date data
  4. Develop and maintain technical documentation for RaCP – Salesforce data entry
  5. Produce Salesforce reports for RaCP and assist in analyzing reports to improve systems
  6. Assist in cross-program coordination of data collection for data entry into Salesforce

C. Other Environmental Management Subjects

  1. Coordination and facilitating submission of Peat Inventory, Drainability Assessment, New Planting Procedure 2015 (HCV Section) and Non-ALS HCV Review
  2. Analyses areas of improvements, create lessons learnt and actively
  3. Work closely with the relevant departments within the RSPO Secretariat in
  4. Provide data to MEL and other when needed in relation to RSPO’s
  5. Track and monitor environmental related compliances

Apart from the duties stated above, to perform any duty or duties reasonably assigned.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT

Education

  • University degree in environmental sciences or related field.

Experience

  • At least 5 years experience in the palm oil industry in relation to assessing climate change, biodiversity and/or environmental issues.
  • Working knowledge of environmental and RSPO audits
  • Deep understanding of environmental issues including climate change and biodiversity, water management, relating to the agriculture sector.
  • Experience in the oil palm industry is an asset.

Technical and Professional Knowledge

  • Able to engage with a diverse stakeholder base, including NGOs, Corporates and Governments.
  • Good understanding of the work of the RSPO and standards.
  • Familiar with other sustainability schemes (e.g. MSPO, Forest Stewardship Council, Marine Stewardship Council, Rainforest Alliance etc.)
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, Word,PowerPoint)
