Annual production capacity of RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil jumped over the 3,000,000 tonnes mark last month, showing the steepest increase thus far since certification began in August 2008.
With current global palm oil production projected to be about 46.6 million tonnes annually, approximately 6.4 percent of all palm oil production is now RSPO-certified, up from 3.2 percent just one year ago. The first RSPO certificates were awarded to producers in the fall of 2008.
Sales of sustainable palm oil products continue to go up as well, with UTZ Certified and GreenPalm together reporting record sales of close to 150,000 tonnes of sustainable palm oil in the month of September. So far in 2010, about 60 percent of sustainable palm oil produced by the rapidly growing number of certified units has been taken up by the market.
These and many more up-to-date market numbers can be found in the RSPO's online Market Center.
