TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

“Members sought to plant oil palm trees in accordance with RSPO

guidelines. By doing so, the yield tends to increase and gain a

higher percentage of palm oil”

………………………….

Mr Somphorn Chunawa, the president of the Chaiburi Oil Palm Collaborative Farming Community Enterprise in the Chai Buri district, Surat Thani province, shared that the group consists of 49 members – 33 males and 16 females. They manage 187.95 hectares of palm plantation land, none of which encroach on protected areas. The group has yet to achieve RSPO certification.

The motivation behind embracing sustainable oil palm farming extends beyond the aspiration to yield fhigher quality palm oil; it encompasses a commitment to preserving the surrounding environment and its natural resources. Currently, they cultivate oil palm trees using the approach recommended by the Department of Agriculture.

Somphorn further stated, “Since our members began efforts to cultivate oil palm in compliance with RSPO guidelines, we have observed an increase in productivity. This has led to a higher yield of palm oil without depleting natural resources. Importantly, our palm oil production now meets international standards, contributing to lower costs and a significant increase in yield.

“Our group members aim to join RSPO. However, due to financial constraints, we require assistance from agencies and funding sources to cover membership and assessment fees. This support is crucial for our success in producing sustainable palm oil.”
