RSPO has embarked on a journey to develop an approach that will allow the RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C) to be applied at the jurisdictional level for the State of Sabah, Malaysia; District of Seruyan, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia and Ecuador. This approach is referred to as the Jurisdictional Approach to Certification (JA for short).
The JA aims to address environmental and social issues by strengthening stakeholders’ engagement and ensuring smallholder inclusion through strong government involvement, and enabling a wider impact area than that of single producer certification.
In March 2018, the RSPO Board of Governors (BoG) endorsed the establishment of a Jurisdictional Working Group (JWG) for the development of the approach, centered around local applicability, acceptance by the market, and pragmatic development over time through ensuring alignment and learning experiences with current RSPO JA landscapes.
The draft of the approach is now open for public consultation. The public consultation period will last for 60 days, from 24 June through to (and including) 23 August 2019.
