The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a global, non-profit organisation with voluntary members working to transform the palm oil industry to make it sustainable. We are focused on bringing together stakeholders from across the palm oil supply chain to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil.

The RSPO Principles & Criteria requires RSPO members to identify, manage, and monitor biodiversity management to minimize the impacts of oil palm production on biodiversity and environment in their pursuit to produce sustainable palm oil.

The Manager, Biodiversity (Biodiversity & People) will be part of the Standards & Sustainability Division and will be responsible to lead the Executive, Biodiversity in overseeing the development and implementation of standards, guidance and procedures related to the above issues.

The location of this role is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Jakarta, Indonesia.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Act as the focal point and technical expert for the ecosystem services, ecosystem benefits, remediation, and compensation procedures (RaCP), environmental impact assessment and protection and conservation of HCV areas including the development of standards and related key documents globally for the relevant committees, working groups, task forces, and departments within the RSPO Secretariat, and supervise the external experts engaged as and when needed.
  • Oversee and facilitate relevant working groups and task forces which are tasked to discuss issues and develop guidance, processes and/or other key documents relating the ecosystem services, ecosystem benefits, remediation and compensation procedures (RaCP), environmental impact assessment related and protection and conservation of HCV areas.
  • Lead discussions, strategize and manage the overall development of new guidance document for ecosystem services, ecosystem benefits, remediation and compensation procedures (RaCP), environmental impact assessment related and protection and conservation of HCV areas.
  • Managing the development and implementation of strategy for RSPO to meet its commitments related to ecosystem services, ecosystem services benefits, as well as remediation and compensation procedures and engage RSPO Members and stakeholders in closing identified gaps, including developing guidance for practical, stepwise implementation and recommendations.
  • Identify areas requiring revision in current indicator, guidelines, tools and other instruments related to the portfolio based on lessons learnt from the implementation of current requirements, areas of improvement to increase the impact of RSPO certification in halting deforestation and promoting protecting conservation areas.
  • Work closely with the relevant departments within the RSPO Secretariat, the relevant committees, and the external experts in the various regions and/or countries, to ensure that the procedures are developed aligned to the RSPO sustainability principles and criteria.
  • Ensure the development and revision of relevant key documents, procedures and guidelines related to the portfolio are in line with the RSPO endorsed methodology and are based on best practices.
  • Train RSPO Secretariat staff on the RSPO endorsed methodology and its implementation, and create the relevant processes, protocols, and training documents.
  • Apart from the duties stated above, to perform any duty or duties reasonably assigned.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT

Education

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry, Environmental Science, Biodiversity, Natural Resource Economic, Agricultural Science, Agriculture Economic, or equivalent. A graduate degree would be advantageous

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in the Forestry, Environmental Science, Biodiversity, Natural Resource Economic, Agricultural Economic, preferably focusing on sustainability, environment, and/or certification schemes.

Technical and Professional Knowledge

  • Familiar with the technical aspects of the High Conservation Value (HCV) concept and application, conservation management, natural resource management, sustainable livelihoods. On the ground experience of the above would be an added advantage.
  • Good understanding of sustainable standards (e.g., RSPO, FSC, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and/or projects

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interact with different stakeholders.
  • A high proficiency in English with good communication skills.
  • Ability in establishing cooperation and rapport with internal and external parties of different backgrounds and/or nationalities.
  • High integrity and a good team player.
  • Goal-oriented and organised.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Ability to be flexible on the implementation of projects and meet given deadlines.
  • Strong strategic thinking skills.
