At the RT8 conference in Jakarta, RSPO President Jan Kees Vis today unveiled a new RSPO trademark that will help consumers to find products with palm ingredients sourced within the framework of the Roundtable. The new symbol could end up on the packaging of thousands of consumer products worldwide.
“The RSPO trademark will enable consumers to confirm very quickly that the products they buy contribute to sustainable cultivation of palm oil and other palm products,” Mr. Vis said. “RSPO certification and this trademark mean that palm cultivation does not contribute to the sustained destruction of valuable tropical forests or damage the interests of people in the regions where the palms are grown,” he added.
The RSPO's Standing Committee on Communications and Claims is developing rules on how and when the new trademark can be used by product manufacturers and retailers. Use of the trademark will, for example, be limited to communications about products in which more than 95% of the palm-derived ingredients was sourced through certified supply chain channels.
Product manufacturers and retail companies will be able to apply for a license to print the new trademark on product packaging starting early 2011, when the rules will have been finalized.
