Zoological Society of London

Profile

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international conservation charity with the vision to create a world where wildlife thrives. We're working every day to achieve this, through our science, our field conservation around the world and engaging millions of people through our two Zoos, ZSL London and ZSL Whipsnade Zoos.

ZSL Indonesia was established in 2002 and is now the largest of our international Conservation Programmes. Conducting scientific research to better understand the impact of oil palm on biodiversity and working with the palm oil industry in order to mitigate these impacts has been a key focus of our work in Indonesia to date.

ZSL's Sustainability Policy Transparency Toolkit (SPOTT) is an online platform supporting sustainable commodity production and trade. SPOTT assesses commodity producers and traders on the public disclosure of their policies, operations and commitments related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. SPOTT scores companies annually against sector-specific indicators, allowing them to benchmark their progress over time. Investors, buyers and other key influencers can use SPOTT assessments to inform stakeholder engagement, manage risk, and increase industry transparency.

Endorsed by the RSPO, SPOTT enables stakeholders, such as financial institutions and manufacturers, to monitor and manage the ESG risks of palm oil production and trade.

Organisation's Commitments Toward Sustainability

  • How will your organisation promote the RSPO internally and to other stakeholders?
ZSL is actively working to promote the RSPO to various stakeholders to develop practical guidance and resources to assist palm oil producers to implement the RSPO Principles & Criteria more effectively, especially in relation to biodiversity. In addition to this, we are also working to identify and address policy related barriers that currently hinder effective implementation.
  • Where relevant, what processes is the organisation establishing to engage with interested parties, for example to resolve conflict or to use sustainably produced palm oil?
SPOTT supports constructive industry engagement by investors, ESG analysts, buyers and other supply chain stakeholders ? those with the power to influence companies to increase disclosures and improve their practices on the ground.

Users of SPOTT can identify areas where a company is making continuous improvement and other areas where engagement may be needed. SPOTT indicators and assessment data can inform policies and procedures for due diligence, screening and sourcing.
  • Where relevant, how will your organisation work towards implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria or assessing supplier performance against these criteria?
We regularly review our palm oil procurement practices across our operations and work to engage palm oil suppliers and our zoo visitors about the importance of using RSPO certified palm oil.
  • Any other information that would support the application such as what your organisation hopes to gain from joining RSPO and how it would support RSPO?
ZSL will support the RSPO by continuing to serve on the RSPO Board of Governors, participate in various RSPO Working Groups, and develop further resources and guidance to assist RSPO members and others in producing, sourcing and promoting sustainable palm oil.
