The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a not-for-profit, international membership organisation that is working to transform markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm. To do this, we have united stakeholders from all sectors of the palm oil supply chain and civil society to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil production and procurement.

Since its inception in 2004, RSPO has enjoyed rapid growth and today has 5,000 members from 101 countries, including oil palm producers, processors, traders, consumer goods manufacturers, retailers, banks, and non-governmental organisations. Thanks to the commitments and actions of these members, nearly 20% of the global supply of palm oil has already been certified as sustainable.

The Senior Executive, Environmental Management will support the Environment Specialist in managing and facilitating operations on compliances against the Environment Criterion of the P&C. This includes working with the Compensation Panel, Biodiversity and High Conservation Value Working Group (BHCVWG), other related WG/TF assigned and implementing work plans, strategies and policies in line with the RSPO’s Theory of Change. This includes related work plans under the Integrity Unit of the Assurance Division.

The daily task includes becoming the point of contact for RSPO members to demonstrate compliance on the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) i.e., liability disclosure, Land Use Change analysis (LUCA) and compensation plan, is also expected to liaise and coordinate with external service providers and the RSPO Compensation Panel to ensure that all reviews / evaluations with regards to LUCA and Compensation Plan are carried out effectively and in a timely manner. This will include coordinating the review of the documents submitted, arranging meetings and related logistics for the Compensation Panel; reporting on discussions and meetings to the Environment Specialist; and monitoring progress of each compensation plan and remedial actions taken. The executive would also work with the Environment Specialist and IT and/or Salesforce Specialist in improving the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) database module in Salesforce, and maintain up-to-date data.

The Executive also would assist in other areas of RSPO’s environmental management subjects such as GHG, Peat, HCS, and Drainability Assessment in a more operational mode. This includes leveraging systems-based technological enhancement and integrating solutions for compliance.

The location of this role is Malaysia.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but will not be limited to the following:

A) Coordinate the external review processes for RaCP

  1. Review submission of technical documents for information completeness

  2. Assist in quality assurance checks on reports

  3. Schedule document reviews by external parties e.g., LUCA reviewers, Compensation Panel, Compensation Plan evaluators

  4. Monitor and track reviews to ensure that reviews are delivered on time

  5. Process review payments collections and disbursements (e.g., letters of undertakings, invoices and related documentation for payments)

  6. Maintain relationships with RSPO growers, reviewers and Compensation Panel

  7. Support the Environment Specialist to maintain technical documentation for RaCP administration

B) RaCP Salesforce data management in Salesforce

  1. Work with the Environment Specialist and IT and/or Salesforce specialist in improving the Remediation and Compensation Procedure (RaCP) database module in Salesforce.

  2. Compile data from non-Salesforce registers (e.g. Google Sheets, emails, Excel sheets), verify data accuracy and upload into the Salesforce database

  3. Maintain accurate and up-to-date data

  4. Develop and maintain technical documentation for RaCP – Salesforce data entry

  5. Produce Salesforce reports for RaCP and assist in analyzing reports to improve systems

  6. Assist in cross-program coordination of data collection for data entry into Salesforce

C) Other Environmental Management Subjects

  1. Coordination and facilitating submission of PalmGHG, LURI, Peat Inventory, and Drainability Assessment through an integrated approach to ensure compliance of RSPO members are met in accordance to RSPO requirements

  2. Analyses areas of improvements, create lessons learnt and actively participate in discussion within RSPO Internally, proposed solutions, and proactively interact with RSPO stakeholders

  3. Work closely with the relevant departments within the RSPO Secretariat in the various regions and/or countries, the relevant committees, and the external experts to ensure that the environmental compliance of RSPO standards are met by the RSPO Members

  4. Provide data to MEL and other when needed in relation to RSPO’s environmental management and performance

  5. Track and monitor environmental related compliances

Apart from the duties stated above, The Executive may be required to perform tasks assigned by the Environment Specialist or the Head of Integrity or Director of Assurance.

THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT

  • University degree in relevant fields e.g., environmental science/management, GIS, natural resource management or related to sustainability

  • 2 – 5 years’ experience in relevant fields

TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge and understanding of GIS, environmental management issues, biodiversity/conservation management, and/or community development projects

  • Familiar with sustainability of the palm oil industry

  • Good communications skills, both written and verbal. Proficiency in English is desired. Proficiency in other languages would be an added advantage.

  • Both a self-driven individual who can work with minimal supervision and a team player who can work in an international and multicultural environment.

  • Willingness to learn from others, and works collaboratively with peers to achieve goals

  • Attention to detail

  • Understanding of other palm oil sustainability standards (e.g. MSPO, ISPO, ISCC, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) and other third-party certification schemes.

  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and/or projects.
