RSPO's ERWG was established after RT-11 in Medan in November 2013 to support and oversee the successful implementation of Criterion 5.6 and Criterion 7.8 of the RSPO Principles & Criteria until the implementation phase which has ended on 31st December 2016. The working group met for the first time after RT11 in Medan in November 2013.
Based on the need to continue supporting RSPO with the expanded scope of works in relations to Criterion 5.6 and Criterion 7.8, the working group is continuing until 31st December 2017.

RSPO PalmGHG Calculator Version 3 is launched in RSPO RT14 in Bangkok, November 2016, as a result of pilot program started in 2014 with feedback from participating members. As of 1st January 2017, public reporting of GHG emissions is mandatory as part of the annual audit summary report published on the RSPO Website.
The RSPO PalmGHG Calculator Version 3.0.1 (or an approved equivalent) shall be used to calculate emissions from estate and mill operations including GHG emissions from any land use changes after November 2005. Independent smallholders are encouraged to use RSPO PalmGHG Calculator Version 3.0.1 to calculate emissions from operations, however, it is not mandatory.
ERWG continues calling for submission of PalmGHG reports of members to RSPO Secretariat to enable continued review on the use of the tool, to facilitate analysis of data and to inform future revision of the PalmGHG calculator.

At the RSPO RT14 in Bangkok, November 2016, an improved version of RSPO GHG Assessment Procedure for New Plantings is launched based on feedback received from members embarking on New Planting Procedure (NPP) for new development.
This latest version of RSPO GHG Assessment Procedure for New Plantings (Version 3, 30th October 2016) will supersede all previous versions of RSPO GHG Assessment Procedure. The compliance for scheme smallholders is the responsibility of the company that is managing the scheme.
Starting on 1st January 2017, public reporting of GHG assessment for new plantings under Criterion 7.8 is made mandatory through; i) standard NPP report uploaded onto the RSPO website; and ii) as part of the annual audit summary report published on the RSPO website under compliance findings of principle 7. The GHG assessment report for new plantings is to be verified by auditors based on ‘Chapter 6 – Reporting of GHG assessment for new plantings’.
