RSPO Certification Scheme for Sustainable Palm Oil Launched at RT5

The 5th Roundtable Meeting (RT5) on Sustainable Palm Oil is the 5th annual RSPO meeting that brings together RSPO Members, stakeholders and partners to discuss the latest developments on meeting the RSPO objectives as well as seeks inputs, concerns, ideas while building constructive dialogue.

Increasingly RSPO is pressured to meet increased and complex demands from stakeholders as the World strives to meet sustainability benchmarks and expectations. RSPO takes a direct approach to engage the issues through sessions planned to stimulate dialogue and an action-based, solutions approach. The highlights of RT5 revolved around the central themes of:

  • RSPO Certification System and its relevant implications
  • Work on advancing the RSPO P&C at various levels

RT5 Objectives:

  • To provide the platform for stakeholders along the palm oil supply chain to review the progress made in the production and use of sustainable palm oil, with specific focus on:
    • Results of trial implementation of the RSPO Principles and Criteria for sustainable palm oil production
    • Outcome of the review of the RSPO Principles and Criteria
    • Effort by various palm oil producing countries in implementing the RSPO Principles and Criteria
    • Development of guidance for implementation of the RSPO Principles and Criteria by smallholders
    • Protocols for verification and certification of sustainable palm oil
    • Supply chain mechanisms for trade and branding of sustainable palm oil
  • To review the progress of RSPO projects on better management practices and capacity building
  • To strengthen the role, cooperation and support of various stakeholders in working towards the production, certification, trade in and use of sustainable palm oil
  • To ensure sustainable palm oil contributes to a better world

The 5th Roundtable Meeting (RT5) witnessed the launch of the RSPO Certification System for Sustainable Palm Oil. With the certification system in place the Market is expected to see the availability of RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm Oil in the first quarter of 2008.

Held from 20th to 22nd November, 2007 in Kuala Lumpur, RT5 was attended by about 540 participants from 28 countries. Full proceedings of RT5 will be posted the RSPO website in due course; meanwhile, the Summary of results of RT5 by Mr Teoh Cheng Hai, Chairman of RT5 Organising Committee and abstracts are now available for downloads.
